Soccer did not come easy for her. As a young child she had to work hard to where she got. When she was growing up soccer was not offered anywhere for women. Mia had to practice pick up soccer playing with men. She was pushed around and challenged but she held her ground. When she got to the college age soccer was offered at some schools. She was recruited by UNC, which offered soccer for women and was the top college team and still is to this day. This just goes to show how much dedication she put into something she loved and now everyone loves her for that.

As a soccer player Mia Hamm has been my role model for as long as I can remember. From such a young age, I can remember fighting with my team mates over who would be number 9 because that was Mia Hamm's number. I have a poster in my room displaying Mia and all her achievements. I'm sure as a little girl I didn't realize all that Mia Hamm was doing for women in sports but she was still awesome in my mind. What made her so awesome was probably the fact that she was on TV and caught the attention of the media just as much as a lot of men athletes. She was even shown in a commercial with Michael Jordan. The only time that Mia Hamm wasn't my number one favorite soccer player was when Brandi Chastain lifted her shirt up in celebration of winning the World Cup, one of the biggest soccer tournaments in the world. Remember the summer after when we lifted up our shirts showing off our bras with CA is #1 after winning the Petoskey tournament?!?
